7 – Vent de Spilite

Pierre Bise

Spilite

Spilite is a volcanic rock, found uniquely on the right bank of the Layon, on the slopes of Pierre Bise. This form of magma gives red, very stony soils, particularly rich in iron and magnesium. La Bise is the wind that blows continuously on these hillsides. On a culminating point of the Layon fault, the very open landscape is magnificent. Towards the South, we have a view of our village of Saint Lambert and the terroir of the Bonnes Blanches. To the west, the Layon Valley winds its way and in the background we can see the Quarts de Chaume promontory advancing towards the Layon. Finally, we find on these slopes a rare and protected fauna and flora more akin to the south of France. We are just above the Nature Reserve of the Coteaux du Pont Barré, a botanical site protected by the Ligue Protectrice des Oiseaux (Bird Protection League). Here we have all the contrasts of a great terroir and a unique place.
